Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat register impressive wins

Hosts Madhya Pradesh recorded a convincing win in their first home game against Himachal Pradesh here in Bhopal. The fourth leg of the second season of IndusInd Bank Nagesh trophy was inaugurated by Mr. RJ Rao, VC Barkatullah University, Prarthana Joshi, General Secretary Red Cross, Mr. Akhilesh Sharma, Director Sports Department BU and Dr. Raghavendra Sharma.

Madhya Pradesh won the toss and opted to field first in a game which was reduced to 16 overs due to wet outfield. The bowlers and the fielders justified their captain’s decision and put the Himachal batsmen under constant pressure. Only Sanjay managed to counter attack as the Himachal batsmen struggled to reach 117 in their 16 overs.

Chasing a par total the hosts stuttered upfront, but a quick fire unbeaten 36 by Rampal and 30 extras by the Himachal bowlers helped them reach the target in the 13th over.  With this, Madhya Pradesh has won all the three matches that they have played so far and look on course to making it to the knockouts.

In the second match of the day, in what turned out to be an absolute thriller, Gujarat overcame Uttarkhand in the final over with just one wicket remaining. The Uttarakhand captain had won the toss and elected to bat first. Opener Gambhir Singh struck a fluent 79 and Deepak Rawat scored an unbeaten 31 as they finished with an above par score of 169/3 in their 20 overs.

Gujarat got off to a shaky start but kept on adding to scoreboard with small yet key partnerships. The game was a roller coaster ride as Uttarkhand had the upper hand one moment only for Gujarat to come back roaring. With five runs required in the last over Gujarat had two wickets remaining, but they lost their ninth through a run out on the very first ball of the last over.  But Vipual Vasava held his nerves and took his team over the line in a thrilling finish.
